Alresford Grammar School c.1921

Alresford Grammar School, was built on the present Pound Hill site in 1910. This photograph shows some of the students ten years later, c.1921, standing in front of the door of the original main school building. At this time student numbers had grown to approx 146. However ten years later this number had dwindled to just 50, the Grammar School closed in 1932 and would re-open as Perins Senior School in 1934.

The student sitting on the far right of the photograph is Miss Dorothy Curtis who would later become a pupil teacher at both the Dean School and Perin’s School, before spending the next 35 years of her life running the Alresford Preparatory School, located in Bay Tree Yard, West Street, until the school closed in 1968.
