Members of Alresford Coursing Club in about 1908. On the far right is Mr. Arthur Hasted the butcher and fourth from left is his slipper (responsible for releasing the two dogs at exactly the same time) Mr. “Smack” .
The essentials of any coursing meeting, which was a winter field sport, were a series of matches, each of which comprised the pursuit of a hare by a pair, or brace, of greyhounds.
Presentation of trophies and prizes at the end of the day and retirement for beverages and refreshments would usually be taken at the Swan Hotel in Alresford. Hare coursing has been illegal since the implementation of the Hunting Act 2004.
