Pupils at the Dean School.

The following is a copy of the caption which accompanied this photograph when it was published in a local newspaper:

“In this photograph of the Dean School, Alresford, the youngsters are celebrating Empire Day, which accounts for the patriotic display of flags. The picture was supplied by Mr Fred Coombs (fifth left in top row), who today lives at Hattingley, near Medstead. Mr Coombs can’t recall the two lads at left and second left, but remembers half-a-dozen or so of the others. Third left is “cocker” Roadnight, with Archie page next to him. The girl dressed up as Britannia (centre) is Doris Barnard, who, with Eric Eakins (next to her), lived at Old Alresford Orphanage. Immediately right of the trident is Jack Greer, while the two girls at front centre are Stella Hall and Joan Joyce, now Mrs Hazelgrove”.
