New Farm Sawmill looking up prospect road in the 1960’s. This family timber business (Thorne’s) operated on this site from 1947 until 2000.
Prospect Road was not bought by Winchester RDC until 1961, although they had bought the top end of the industrial zone from William Thorne Sawmills in 1953. Philip and William Murray Thorne had bought the 9 acres of land including the site for Gush and Dents in 1945. In the 1940s and early 50s this was a ploughed field . The first sawmill crane went in the late 50s and then was replaced by the larger one that dominated the skyline in 1971 until it came came down in 2000.
