The following text is copied from a 1965 “Alresford - Official Guide” :

Another reminder of the “American Occupation” must not be omitted from this record. Along the footpath beside the river to the left at the bottom of the Dean is the grave-stone shown in the accompanying photograph. Hambone Jr. was a mongrel dog belonging to a lady friend of the American troops, which was adopted as a regimental pet. On its death, as a result of a road accident shortly before “D” Day, it was buried in this grave beside the river. The present stone, which replaces the original wooden memorial, was unveiled by the American Vice-Consul at Southampton in September, 1962.
